WIFI: 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz

This video does a good job of explaining the differences between the two WiFi frequencies, and why those numbers you see are misleading.

CONTROL: Can’t Control a Device

Control Issues

There are several different methods of control for equipment: IP, Serial, and IR. Of these IR (Infrared) control is the most common and most prone to problems. If you are experiencing any of the following issues, it is likely due to a detached or damaged IR Emitter…

  • TV isn’t powering on or off
  • Volume isn’t being controlled
  • Sources not changing
  • Channels not changing
  • DVD, Cable/Satellite, other device not operating

How to reattach IR Emitters

IR Emitters are devices that are stuck to the front of your equipment and relay the commands to the device using Infrared light. Often we find that these have come detached from the equipment because someone has cleaned the equipment and accidentally knocked it off or children have pulled them off.

If these have fallen off they will need to be reattached to regain control. Look for adhesive that is remaining on the source equipment and reattach where it came off. If you can’t find it, a trick is to get a flashlight and shine it on the front of the equipment and look for a difference in color (usually more red in color) and reattach there. If that doesn’t work, with one had hold the remote device and repeatedly press a button that is not working (ie. if volume isn’t working press Volume Up or Volume Down, if you can’t change channels try Channel Up). Keep pressing the button as you, with your other had, move the IR Emitter around on the face of the equipment that isn’t working. Try to identify a spot on the front of the device where the button works reliably and then re-attach it there.

CONTROL: Remote or Touchscreen Lockup

If you experience a remote or touchscreen that doesn’t perform as expected you may try the following steps to get it resolved.

The device does not power on and nothing is on the screen…

The battery is the most common issue with wireless remote devices. If the device does not power on, nothing is visible on the screen, and no lights are on then the battery is likely dead. Try the following…

  • Replace the batteries
  • Place the device in the charging base or wire for at least 15 minutes
  • Try resetting the remote by one of the processes below

Reset your device…

TIP: How to Add Your Music Library to Your Sonos System

Learn how to add your Music Library to your Sonos wireless HiFi system. In just a couple clicks, your Sonos Controller will be setup to play your music library collection from your computer, throughout your home.

TIP: Setting Up Your Music Services in Sonos

In this video, we’ll show you how to add a streaming music service to your Sonos system. The video demonstrates the process using a Pandora account, but you can follow the same steps to add many other music services like Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer etc. supported on Sonos. We’ll also explain how you can add multiple accounts for a single music service to your system, and how to switch between the accounts in the Sonos app.

WiFi: Common Issues

There are a number of things that can lead to WiFi communication issues. Some of the common problems that can be experienced could be any or all of the following.

  • Slow performance
  • Intermittent connectivity
  • Stuttering audio or video playback

Some simple things to try to resolve the issue are as follows.

  • Reboot your device (iPhone, tablet, Computer, etc.)
  • Reboot the network hardware (modem, router, access points)
  • Check with family members to try to figure out current data usage

Depending on your network equipment, there are more advanced options to trying to make you connection more stable.  Consumer grade routers and switches, like the ones available at the electronics stores we all frequent, can be a great solution for many homes but not the best option in many situations. For instance if you are someone with a large system or home with many devices consuming large amounts of data (cameras, control systems, etc.) these consumer grade systems don’t always provide the best performance or reliability.

TIP: If you have smart home features, don’t factory reset or replace any network gear without first talking to us about your system as this may cause unforeseen complications. Often times your ISP will instruct you on how to factory reset their devices, but in some cases if that happens it will create new issues that cannot be resolved without a service call. Smart home devices connect using your network and sometimes rules need to be created in your networking gear to allow proper functionality, but if a device is factory reset it will delete these rules.
